Night owl (texting)
The share of someone’s messages sent between midnight and 5am — a simple, honest proxy for who’s awake when they probably shouldn’t be.
Rather than trying to infer a sleep schedule, a night-owl measure just asks a narrower question: of everything this person sent, what fraction landed in the five hours most people are asleep? It’s a proxy, not a diagnosis — someone on a different time zone, a night-shift job, or a single bad week can all move the number without meaning anything about their habits generally. What it’s good at is being unambiguous: a text is either timestamped inside that window or it isn’t.
Example
If 6.6% of someone’s messages land between midnight and 5am, that’s roughly one message in fifteen sent in the small hours — noticeable, but not the majority of their texting.
Frequently asked questions
Whose timezone does this use?+
Whatever timezone the phone that generated the export had at the time — WhatsApp writes local time into the file, not UTC, so this reflects local nights, not a shared clock.
Does this mean the person has bad sleep habits?+
Not on its own — it’s one number about one chat. A relative who lives on another continent will always look like a night owl in this measure, correctly, without it meaning anything about their actual sleep.
